state, or does it have to be a CDL issued by the state North Dakota?
If you live in the state of North Dakota, you need a North Dakota
CDL. That means that you must take the exams that qualify you for a
North Dakota CDL.
What are the
hazardous materials
endorsement qualifications?
First, you must pass a fingerprint
and criminal background check. Once you have completed the background
check and filled out required paperwork, you must take and pass a
hazardous materials written exam.
Is taking a road
test before I
obtain a CDL mandatory?
Yes, you must take, and pass, a road
test before you acquire a commercial driver’s license.
Are there any
other mandatory
tests?
Yes, you must complete and pass a written examination
and a pre-trip inspection before you gain authorization (a CDL) to
drive a tractor trailer.
Is there a
mandatory waiting time
between when you obtain your CDL and when you apply for
endorsements?
No, you can actually apply for an endorsement
when you apply for your CDL, though there will be a different written
test you will be required to take and pass.
What endorsements
can I apply
for?
There are several, including hazardous materials, tank,
triple/double trailer, and air brakes endorsements.
If I would like to
drive a tanker
truck, do I only need a CDL, or do I need special licensing?
Before
you can drive a tanker truck you must have a tank endorsement. To
obtain a tank endorsement, you must pass a written exam, in addition
to your CDL exam.
Where do I learn
how to drive a
tractor trailer?
The best way to obtain behind-the-wheel
training is at a North Dakota truck driving school. This is perhaps
the safest way to obtain hands-on experience since you have training
on the lot before you hit the road.
How many years are
required before I
can graduate from North Dakota truck driving school?
Actually,
truck driving school in not a long process! It generally only takes
three to five weeks, and then you are ready to take your exams and
get on the road.
Does the North
Dakota Department of
Transportation provide vehicles to test in?
No. You must
provide your own vehicle. You must have a sponsor, someone who will
let you use their vehicle. Your sponsor may be from your truck
driving school, or it may be someone that you know.
